Beyond Tallinn: Why You Need a Car to Experience the Real Estonia

Renting a car in Estonia is the easiest way to see a country that most visitors barely scratch. Tallinn's medieval Old Town gets the postcards, but the real Estonia — bog boardwalks in Lahemaa National Park, windmills on Saaremaa Island, the sandy summer beaches of Pärnu — sits well beyond the reach of buses and trains. With a rental car, all of it is a comfortable day's drive away.

At Car Rental Choice, we compare live prices from international brands and trusted local Estonian suppliers in one search, so you see the full market — not just one company's fleet. Economy cars in Estonia start from around €16–€20 per day in the off-season, and most bookings come with free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up, unlimited mileage options, and no hidden charges at the counter.

Why Book Your Estonia Rental Car with Car Rental Choice

One search, the whole market. We compare rates from major international brands — Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise — alongside well-reviewed Estonian and Baltic suppliers such as Top Rent, AMRENT, and Prime, which often undercut the big names by 20–40%.

Total price up front. The rate you see includes the mandatory taxes and fees. Insurance terms, deposit amounts, and fuel policy are shown clearly before you confirm — not discovered at the desk.

Free cancellation. Plans change. Most offers on our site can be cancelled free of charge up to 48 hours before your pick-up time.

Real customer reviews. Every supplier is rated by verified renters on pick-up speed, car condition, and service, so you can weigh a lower price against the experience behind it.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Car in Estonia?

Estonia is one of the more affordable rental markets in Northern Europe, but prices swing sharply with the seasons.

SeasonTypical economy rateNotes

Nov–Mar (low season)

€16–€25/day

Cheapest rates of the year; winter tires included by law

Apr–May & Sep–Oct (shoulder)

€20–€30/day

Great value, mild weather, quiet roads

Jun–Aug (peak)

€40–€60/day

Book 4–8 weeks ahead; summer demand roughly doubles

Three reliable ways to pay less:

  1. Book early for summer. July and August rates can be two to three times winter prices, and the cheapest cars sell out first.
  2. Choose a full-to-full fuel policy so you only pay for the fuel you actually use.
  3. Compare airport vs. downtown pick-up. Tallinn Airport usually has the most competition and the lowest prices in the country; downtown and ferry terminal desks often charge a premium.

Weekly rentals also work out cheaper per day than short hires — useful, since the average rental in Estonia runs about a week.

Where to Pick Up a Rental Car in Estonia

Tallinn Airport (TLL). Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport is Estonia's main gateway and its cheapest, best-stocked rental hub. International brands operate desks in the arrivals hall, while several local suppliers sit within a short walk of the terminal — a five-minute stroll can save a meaningful amount on the same class of car.

Tallinn city centre & ferry terminals. Arriving by ferry from Helsinki or Stockholm? Cars are available at the port terminals and downtown offices, though selection is smaller and rates run higher than at the airport.

Tartu. Estonia's university city and 2024 European Capital of Culture is the natural base for exploring the south — Lake Peipsi, the Onion Route, and Setomaa. Pick-up is available at Tartu Airport and downtown.

Pärnu. The summer capital on the west coast. Handy for beach holidays and for continuing south into Latvia.

Kuressaare (Saaremaa Island). Rent locally on Estonia's largest island, or take your mainland rental across on the Virtsu–Kuivastu ferry — most suppliers allow it, but confirm when booking.

Which Car Should You Rent in Estonia?

Economy & compact (Toyota Yaris, Skoda Fabia, VW Polo). The most popular choice by far, and for good reason: Estonian roads are quiet and well maintained, distances are short (Tallinn to Tartu is about 2 hours), and city parking suits smaller cars. Best value for couples and solo travellers.

Intermediate & estate (Skoda Octavia, VW Golf Variant). Extra luggage space for families and longer Baltic itineraries without a big jump in price.

SUV & crossover (Skoda Kamiq, Nissan Qashqai). Worth considering for winter trips, gravel roads to remote bog trails, or simply higher seating comfort. All-wheel drive is rarely necessary but reassuring from December to March.

Vans & 7–9 seaters. Available at Tallinn Airport for groups; book well ahead in summer.

Manual transmission is the default in Estonia and costs less. If you need an automatic, filter for it and book early — automatics are a smaller share of the fleet and sell out first in peak season.

Driving in Estonia: Rules & Practical Tips

Estonia is one of Europe's easiest countries to drive in — light traffic, good signage, and no toll roads for passenger cars. A few rules to know:

  • Drive on the right, overtake on the left.
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h outside built-up areas. Some dual carriageways allow 100–110 km/h in summer, and limits are lowered in winter — always follow posted signs.
  • Headlights on at all times, day and night, all year. It's the law.
  • Blood alcohol limit: 0.02% — effectively zero tolerance. Don't drink and drive.
  • Winter tires are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March (the period can be extended in severe conditions). Rental cars are fitted with them automatically in season, at no extra decision on your part — but check whether a winter fee applies to your rate.
  • Seat belts are compulsory for all passengers; children under 135 cm need an appropriate child seat, which you can add to your booking.
  • Parking in Tallinn and Tartu city centres is paid; mobile parking apps and ticket machines are widely used. Old Town Tallinn is best explored on foot — park outside the walls.
  • Wildlife caution: moose and deer crossings are a genuine hazard on rural roads at dawn and dusk, especially in autumn. Slow down where warning signs appear.
  • Fuel: petrol stations are plentiful along main routes and most are self-service, open 24/7, and accept international cards.

What You Need to Rent a Car in Estonia

  • Driver's license held for at least 1–2 years (varies by supplier). EU/EEA licenses are accepted as-is. Licenses printed in non-Latin script should be accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP).
  • Minimum age: typically 21, though some suppliers rent from 19. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver fee — the exact amount is shown before you book.
  • Passport or national ID matching the booking name.
  • Credit card in the main driver's name for the security deposit. Some local suppliers accept debit cards or offer low-deposit rates — use our payment filters to find them.

Crossing borders? Rentals from Estonia can generally be driven into Latvia and Lithuania free of charge or for a small fee, and one-way drop-offs in Riga or Vilnius are widely available. Travel to Finland by ferry or into non-EU countries requires explicit written permission from the supplier — request it at the time of booking.

Road Trip Ideas from Estonia

Lahemaa National Park loop (1 day from Tallinn). Bog boardwalks at Viru Raba, manor houses at Palmse and Sagadi, and the captains' village of Käsmu — Estonia's most rewarding day drive, under an hour from the capital.

Tallinn → Tartu → Lake Peipsi (2–3 days). Combine the capital with Estonia's intellectual heart, then follow the Onion Route villages along Europe's fifth-largest lake.

Saaremaa & Muhu islands (2–3 days). Ferry from Virtsu, then windmills at Angla, the Kaali meteorite crater, and Kuressaare's episcopal castle.

The full Baltic run (5–7 days, one-way). Tallinn to Riga to Vilnius is one of Europe's great under-the-radar road trips — around 600 km of coastline, forests, and three capital Old Towns. One-way rentals from Estonia to Latvia and Lithuania are among the most booked routes on our platform.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about car rentals at Estonia

Both are available, but manual is the default and cheaper. Automatics make up a smaller share of the fleet, so filter for automatic and book early, especially for summer travel.

If you plan to leave Tallinn, yes. Public transport covers the main cities, but national parks, islands, coastal villages, and the Latvian border region are far easier — often only possible — by car. Fuel is reasonably priced, roads are quiet, and there are no tolls for passenger vehicles.

The standard minimum age is 21, with some suppliers renting from 19. Drivers under 25 usually pay a young driver surcharge, which is displayed before you confirm your booking.

A valid driver's license (with an IDP if your license is in non-Latin script), a passport or EU ID card, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit. Some local suppliers accept debit cards.

Yes. Most suppliers allow travel throughout the Baltic states, often free or for a small cross-border fee, and one-way drop-offs in Riga or Vilnius are widely available. Declare cross-border travel when booking so the insurance remains valid.

Yes — winter tires are legally required from 1 December to 1 March, and rental companies fit them automatically during this period. You don't need to arrange anything, but check whether your quote includes a seasonal fee.

November and January are consistently the cheapest months, with economy rates often below €20 per day. July and August are the most expensive due to peak tourist demand.

Economy cars start from around €16–€20 per day in the low season (November–March) and €40–€60 per day in July and August. The yearly average sits near €40 per day. Booking 2–4 weeks in advance — earlier for summer — typically secures the best rate.
