Booking early almost always means better rates and more choice. Especially true in peak travel times (summer, school holidays, etc.). Last-minute rentals can be double the price and you might end up with something wildly impractical — like a van in central London.

UK roads can be tight — especially in villages, older towns, and country lanes. Unless you really need the space, choose a smaller car. You’ll thank yourself when you’re squeezing into a high street parking space.

Automatics are not the default in the UK. If you need one, specifically request it when booking — and be prepared to pay a bit more. Don’t assume it'll be automatic like in the US or Canada.
